Derren Parsons is an Australian fantasy author and the creator of The Chronicles of Arghost, a dark fantasy series known for its rich world-building, political intrigue, and character-driven storytelling.
IN HIS OWN WORDS
I write the kinds of stories that refuse to let go of you — where the darkness is real, the redemption is earned, and the cost of everything is measured in choices that cannot be taken back.
The Chronicles of Arghost began not as a world I invented, but one I found — a place that had always existed, waiting to be named. Arghost is not a kind world. Its kingdoms rise and fall. Its gods are silent. Its people endure.
What compels me most is the space between who a person was and who they become — the fracture point, the moment of no return. Every character I write is defined by that moment: Volthar, Niama, Caelen, and all those yet to walk the pages.
If you're looking for a fantasy series where the heroes are spotless and the villains are cartoons, this isn't it. But if you want to feel something real — come into Arghost.
Derren lives in Western Australia with his family and continues to expand the world of Arghost.
Why the shadows matter as much as the light
Dark fantasy, done honestly, isn't darkness for spectacle. It is the honest weight of a world that doesn't owe its people salvation. I have always believed that a story's moral core is revealed not in the moments of victory, but in the moments of failure — and what a character chooses to do next.
Arghost grew from that conviction. The world is old, scarred, and shaped with consequences. The Cataclysm didn't just reshape the land; it reshaped what people believe is possible. Into that landscape I place characters who carry the full complexity of human nature — capable of tremendous cruelty and, occasionally, grace.
"A character's greatest moment often arrives dressed as their lowest."
The antagonists of the Chronicles are not obstacles to be defeated. They are mirrors. Volthar — whose origins I am still chronicling — began as a slave and became something the world had no name for. Understanding how that happens, step by irreversible step, is the work that I find most important.
I write every day. Some days it's pages; other days it's a single line that unlocks a door that's been sealed for months. The craft demands patience, and the series rewards readers who bring the same. These are not books that are quickly over. Arghost takes up residence.
Shadows and Salvation is complete. Volthar Origins continues. There is still much of this world left to uncover. Not all of it will be comfortable.
"Every story I write is a question dressed as a journey — asking what it costs to survive in a world that was never built to protect you, and whether what remains afterwards can still be called a soul."
